Quantum Information and Computation Team

The first applications where quantum devices have an advantage over classical computers will most likely be hybrid solutions where some part of the computation is done by a classical computer and specific carefully chosen subtask is run by a quantum computer. We are developing hybrid methods (e.g. anticipative quantum measurements) and tools as well as hybrid algorithms and software. The core idea is to use both a classical and quantum computer in some information processing tasks, in a way that their combined action is better than the individual performances alone.

Today, software for quantum computers is developed by individuals or small teams of developers, unlike in the classical world where large teams working on an entire system are common. This means that development practices are often specific to the programmers composing code, with little possibilities for collaboration, apart from reusing completed artifacts. We aim at finding solutions to most common software engineering problems in quantum context. We take into account that quantum software is first needed for current generation of noisy and erroneous quantum computers.

A quantum advantage means a quantitive difference in performances of a quantum device or protocol compared to the best classical setup. One of the most pressing ongoing explorations in quantum information science is to identify and analyse information processing tasks that demonstrate a quantum advantage. A necessary ingredient in any such setup is that the systems and devices are properly 'quantum', meaning that they have some quantum features that distinguish them from devices operating on the classical domain. This kind of quantum resources include entanglement, coherence, incompatibility and contextually. We investigate their detection, quantification, properties and applications.
