Linux FAQ - a quick reference for JYU linux users

General - RedHat Enterprise Workstation 7 (RHEL WS)

University of jyväskylä has a full license for Red Hat Enterprise Workstation linux 7 distribution (RHEL WS). IT-services will provide installation, management and support for linux workstations.

- if a linux OS is needed, please contact your local IT-services support. Support can also recommend hardware configuration known to be compatible with current RHEL WS version.

- note, support for the latest hardware drivers (wlan, sound, bluetooth,…etc) cannot be necessarily found in the current linux kernel, but they’ll be added to it in future updates as the kernel evolves

If you cannot log on to your RHEL workstation

- you user account has not been (yet) added to a particular workstation. JYU workstations have user accounts added to the workstation itself and they authenticate from central source (kerberos). An account is added after the initial installation of the OS by support.

- if your workstation is not connected to the network, the authentication cannot be made and hence the login is impossible.

Software

Every linux workstation is provided with basic selection of most commonly used software and it is also possible to add new software if needed. In addition to the locally installed software, the larger software (Mathematica, Matlab, etc.) have been installed on to a network share and can be run from there. A mount point for the share has been created on every RHEL workstation as ‘/automisc/software’. Also for the most commonly used bigger software, the icons have been created in to the software menu.

Software installation

If new software is needed, please ask your local support to install it. You may also compile software form source code and locate it under your home folder ‘/home/<user>’ or on a scratch disk ‘/space/<user>’

Commonly used (by web browser) services provided by university

Systems like SAP, ESS, SOLE etc. will not run on linux platform as is, but they can be run via software virtualisation server (Citrix) at address https://remoteapps.jyu.fi. All the necessary applications are available there.

Operating system and software updates

Important updates are managed and installed centrally to the linux workstations. This is a way to ensure all the systems are up to date, what comes on security updates provided by RedHat.

Printing and data storage

There are two printing queues available: B&W and colour one. Both queues are secure queues in which the printing is being buffered and can be printed out on any multipurpose copier after authentication on printer by a password or physical key.

LVM is being used in disk partitioning (logical Volume Manager). The partitions populate volume group called vgel7ws. LVM provides on-line resizing of the partitions amongst the other very handy disk handling possibilities.

Rights - A linux user has full rights to his local home and scratch disk folder. Please prefer your home directory when saving your data. A user has no write or modification rights to the system directories.
