Miksi tutkimukseni on tärkeää ja kenelle

Tutkin nuorten motivaatiota, hyvinvointia ja koulutuksellisia polkuja. Tutkimukseni on hyvin tärkeää ja ajankohtaista niin nuorille, vanhemmille, opettajille ja päätöksentekijöille.

Olemme osoittaneet, että alakoululaisista jopa lähes puolet kokee kyynisyyttä koulua kohtaan ja on vaarassa menettää koulun merkityksen.

Digitaalisuudella on kahdet kasvot. Toisaalta nämä koulun merkityksen kadottaneet kokevat, että he innostuisivat koulun käynnistä jos heille olisi mahdollista käyttää digiteknologiaa koulussa. Toisaalta osoitimme juuri pitkittäistutkimuksen avulla että koulu-uupumus ja nettiriippuvuus muodostavat kumulatiivisia toisiaan ruokkivia polkuja sekä peruskoululaisilla että lukiolaisilla. Uupumus edelleen välittää nettiriippuvuuden ja masennuksen välistä yhteyttä: nettiriippuvuus voi siis johtaa masennukseen uupumuksen kautta. Digiloikka tulee siis tehdä mutta huolella.

Uusi haaste Suomessa on maahanmuuttajaoppilaat. Suomessa on OECDn yksi suurimmista eroista kantaväestön ja maahanmuuttajaoppilaiden osaamisessa. Osoitimme, että peruskoulussa erityisesti maahanmuuttajapoikien uupumus kasvaa voimakkaasti.

Koulusiirtymät ovat vaiheita jolloin motivaatio ja hyvinvointi usein muuttuu. Peruskoulun jälkeen lukion siirtyneiden uupumus kasvaa usein voimakkaasti, erityisesti tytöillä. Viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana lukiotyttöjen uupumus on lisääntynyt jopa 30%. Tytöt kokevat lukion haastavaksi ja se johtaa usein uupumuksen lisääntymiseen ja välivuosiin. Välivuodet edelleen voivat laskea motivaatiota ja lisätä pahoinvointia. Yksi välivuosi kuitenkin on usein positiivinen Suomessa.

Sen sijaan ammatillisiin opintoihin siirtyneiden uupumus ja stressi laskee ja itsearvostus lisääntyy. Olemme havainneet tämän sekä Suomessa että esimerkiksi Britanniassa.

Suomessa uran työstäminen tulisi aloittaa jo huomattavasti varhemmin, viimeistään peruskoulun lopussa. Nuoret jäävät nyt kovin yksin sen kanssa. Osoitimme myös että jopa 40% nuorista 23-25vuotiasta aikuisista edelleen miettii ja märehtii identiteettiään ja miettii suuntaa elämälleen.

Miten lisätä motivaatiota ja hyvinvointia? Koulussa on tärkeää oppia varautumaan vastoinkäymisiin ja luoda pystyvyyden kokemuksia ennen keskeisiä koulutuksellisia siirtymiä. Nuoret innostuvat kun he kiinnostuvat ja kokevat opetuksen relevantiksi ja kokevat kompetenssinsa ja taitonsa ja tilanteen haastavuuden yhteensopivuutta. Tällaisissa tilanteissa opiskelijat kokevat usein virtaus, flow, kokemuksia.
