The Conferment of Degrees Ceremony for new Masters and Doctors from all faculties of the University of Jyväskylä will be held on 24–26 May 2019.

In the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony, the new Masters and Doctors will be given their degree in the ceremonial act of conferment, and will receive a Master’s laurel and ring or a Doctor’s hat and sword as the sign of it. Distinguished persons will also be appointed as honorary doctors in the ceremony.

Registration for the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony 2019 has ended.

The conferment of degrees tradition dates back to medieval Paris. It arrived in Finland in the 17th century via Uppsala University in Sweden. The first conferment of degrees at the University of Jyväskylä was held 50 years ago, in 1969. Once again, we have the opportunity to cherish this ceremonious and joyful tradition in Jyväskylä.  We warmly welcome you, along with your possible companion, to take part in this centuries-long academic tradition!

The festivities culminate in the Act of Conferment, which will be held on Saturday, 25 May 2019 in the Main Building, Seminaarinmäki. During the Act, master promovendi are awarded the master’s degree and the right to wear the master’s laurel and ring as the symbols of the degree. Similarly, doctor promovendi are given the doctoral degree and the doctoral hat and sword.

The three-day conferment ceremony also includes the Garland Binding Dinner for master’s degree holders and the Sword Sharpening Dinner for doctors on Friday, 24 May 2019. In addition, master’s and doctoral degree holders with their companions will have the opportunity to dance old-time dances and celebrate at the traditional Dinner and Ball on Saturday, 25 May 2019.

On Sunday, 26 May 2019, the newly conferred degree holders will take a refreshing cruise on Lake Päijänne and have a lunch at Savutuvan Apaja. All the conferment events will feature performances by artists and musicians, most of whom are students or alumni of the University of Jyväskylä.
