Doctoral hat and sword

Doctoral hat

Wearing a doctoral hat

An Academic Procession in the Conferment Degree CeremonyAll doctors participating in the Act of Conferment are recommended to wear a doctoral hat. However, it is obligatory only for doctors to be conferred. The hat is used in the day and evening events of the conferment day. In the Act of Conferment, the hat is brought to the auditorium in the left hand, the lyre pointing forward. The hat is put on at the same time with the Conferrer of Degrees. Newly conferred doctors also wear the hat at the Dinner and Ball. For other doctors this is decided separately.

The Conferment of Degrees Ceremony at the University of Jyväskylä also includes a church service. There are no clear rules on using doctoral hats in churches.  However, the Conferment of Degrees Committee has decided that all doctors take their hats off during the church service.

The doctoral hat is a symbol of degree and status, and should be handled accordingly. For example, it is not allowed to place the hat upside down on a table. The best place for storing the hat is in a dedicated hat box.

Getting a doctoral hat

The hat must fit well on the head. To ensure this, doctoral hats are always tailor-made. All doctor promovendi may purchase the hat directly from a desired manufacturer.

Hat model and colour

The Finnish doctoral hat resembles a top hat. A golden emblem is attached to the velvet ribbon of the hat. Traditionally the hat is black, green, red or purple, but different disciplines may have specific colours. The hat colour at the University of Jyväskylä is black, excluding the Faculty of Sport and Health Studies where it is dark blue.

The emblem of the hat is defined carefully for different disciplines and universities. Traditionally the emblem for the doctors of philosophy and psychology at the University of Jyväskylä is a lyre encircled by laurels. Usually hat manufacturers are aware of the emblems of different universities and disciplines.

Doctoral sword

Wearing a doctoral sword

Miehen promootioasu ja miekan kiinnitys, klikkaa kuvaaThe sword used in the conferment act is the officially certified civilian sword of the independent Republic of Finland. It comes with a scabbard, a black or golden scabbard holder and the golden emblem of the University. The total length of the sword is 87 centimetres, the blade being 75 centimetres. The weight of the sword is 730 grams (1.6 pounds).

The sword is traditionally carried on the left side. Men carry the sword in the scabbard holder, which is attached to a firm loop sewn into trousers. A catch on the holder keeps the sword firmly in its place. (Click the image to enlarge.)

Female doctors should also have a sword. In most cases, the sword cannot be directly attached to dresses because the material is not strong enough. For carrying the sword, ladies’ outfits for the conferment day should include a belt or other similar aid that matches the outfit. The sword can be attached creatively, for example, by wearing the belt under the skirt and taking out some of the seam. In a two-piece outfit, the fastening can be hidden under the top. If it is unreasonably difficult to modify the outfit, the sword can also be carried in the left hand.

There is a catch in the scabbard holder. In addition, the sword is supplied with a tightening strap with a buckle and two buttonholes. They can all be utilised to attach the sword.
