Study objectives

The objective of the Master’s Degree Programme in Educational Sciences is to prepare highly competent and internationally oriented educators to raise the quality of education in the diversifying contexts of the globalised world. During the Master’s Degree Programme in Educational Sciences, students will gain a broad understanding of the field of education with a particular awareness of international issues in education. The students become familiar with the Finnish education system and reflect it to their own experiences and the global contexts. Students will have the opportunity to specialise in areas of education which they find the most relevant and interesting. The areas of specialisation are Educational Leadership, Early Childhood Studies, Inclusive Education, Guidance and Counselling, Foreign Language Pedagogy, and Current Issues in Education and Psychology.

Students will acquire scientific expertise in the field of education and be able to work with theories and analyse and develop educational practices. The Master’s Degree creates a foundation for producing scientific knowledge and applying scientific methods in practice in the field of education. The programme prepares experts into various sectors of education in national and international contexts: educational planning, administration, consultancy, coordination, development, teaching and research.

Study contents

The programme offers a unique opportunity to get firsthand experience on Finnish Education System.  Studies also include aspects of intercultural competence and international education policies and practices. Research studies consist of academic skills, research methods and master’s degree thesis.Students also focus on their chosen Specialisation area (Early Childhood Studies, Educational Leadership, Inclusive Education, Guidance and Counselling, Foreign Language Pedagogy, Current Issues in Education and Psychology) where they acquire deeper understanding of the specific topics. Collaboration and discussion between students focusing on different Specialisation areas deepen their understanding of the different educational phenomena and broaden their multi-professional and multidisciplinary knowledge and know-how. 

Tuition fees

In Finnish universities, there are no tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens. Tuition fees concern only non-EU/EEA degree students who start their studies in English-taught Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that.

The tuition fee is 10 000 euros / academic year.

The fees will not concern those non-EU/EEA students who

  • have started their studies before autumn 2017
  • are enrolled in Doctoral/PhD level studies and research
  • study in degree programmes taught in Finnish
  • are EU/EEA citizens or their family members (spouse / child)
  • are already residing in Finland or some other EU country on a permanent basis (i.e. are equivalent to EU citizens *)

University of Jyväskylä has scholarships available for students who are required to pay tuition fees. Scholarships are applied for when applying for the admission to the programme.

Structure of studies

The degree consists of 120 ECTS credits:

  • Orientation, Communication and Language Studies, and Academic Skills 15 ECTS credits
  • Advanced Studies in Education 75 ECTS credits, including master’s thesis 30 ECTS credits
  • Specialisation Studies 25 ECTS credits
  • Optional Studies 5 ECTS credits

Final project

Students are required to conduct a small scale research and write a Master’s thesis supervised by professors and senior lecturers. The thesis topics are related to the research areas of the Faculty of Education. The thesis process is supported by research method courses, research seminars and individual supervision.

Career opportunities

The programme prepares students to work as experts in a variety of educational settings, for example, as educational planners, consultants, coordinators, teachers, teacher educators or researchers.

Internationalization

Education research and teaching are realised in connection with high level international networks, emphasising social change and societal impact. In our international cooperation, as in all activities,the focus is on the future – education, learning and teaching in the rapidly changing, global society.

Master’s Degree Programme in Educational Sciences is an international programme with a global application process. Our students represent several countries from different continents. The cultural diversity of this multinational learning community is strongly emphasised all through the programme.Students bring their own expertise to the group and create a diverse learning environment where different views are shared and valued.

Internship is an optional part of the programme where students have a possibility to familiarise themselves with an educational institution either in Finland or abroad. Visiting scholars from different countries visit our Faculty regularly and international seminars are organised yearly. 

Research focus

Research and teaching in the field of education focus on lifelong learning, ranging from early childhood education to adult education. Research activities provide a sustainable basis for the continuous development of our internationally recognised educational system. Our research is located particularly within the following core field of the University of Jyväskylä: education, learning, and teaching in the future and human technology.

Research in the Faculty of Education and Psychology and Finnish Institute for Educational Research can be divided into five domains of research strength:

  1. Processes or learning, teaching and guidance
  2. Professional identities, career paths and competences in the changing work life
  3. Wellbeing, participation and contexts of growth of children and young people
  4. Special topics of learning and participation
  5. Education of the future and societal change

Postgraduate study opportunities

After finishing the programme and being awarded a Master’s Degree of Arts in Education, the students are eligible to apply for doctoral studies. Universities have different admission requirements for doctoral studies; please check the requirements from the universities in question.
