Programme Description

The aim of the MasterBPA programme is for students to understand the interaction between different systems of the body during physical exercise, as well as the relevant theoretical background.

The programme offers three fields of specialisation:

  1. Biomechanics (muscle-tendon mechanics, neuromuscular function, human movement)
  2. Exercise Physiology (cellular and molecular adaptation, cardiorespiratory function, human physiology)
  3. Science of Sport Coaching and Fitness Testing (scientific bases and applications of fitness testing, strength and power training, endurance training)

The two-year programme (120 ECTS credits) is designed to prepare students for careers in research centres, medical rehabilitation centres, sport medicine and exercise testing centres, sport academies and physical exercise and sports organisations. It also provides qualifications to apply for postgraduate studies.

The master’s thesis will be constructed in the form of a scientific paper with the aim of publishing it in an international peer-reviewed journal.

Study objectives

The programme educates academic experts who understand the interactive mechanisms between different physiological systems and physical exercise, and their theoretical background. The programme is designed to prepare students for careers in research centres, medical rehabilitation centres, sports medicine and exercise testing centres, sports academies and physical exercise and sports organisations. It also qualifies students to apply for postgraduate studies in the field.

The two-year Master's degree programme offers three possible fields of specialisation to choose from:

Tuition fees

There are no tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens. Tuition fees concern only non-EU/EEA degree students who start their studies in English-taught Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that at the University of Jyväskylä.

In this programme, the tuition fee is 10.000 €/academic year.

Please note that no tuition is charged if you:

  • are a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland
  • are in possession of a valid residence permit in Finland of the type A, P, P-EU, or EU Blue Card

University of Jyväskylä has scholarships available for students who are required to pay tuition fees. Scholarships are applied for when applying for the admission to the programme.

Structure of studies

The 120 ECTS required for the Master’s Degree consists of 25 ECTS common courses, 80 ECTS advanced studies according to the major subject, and 15 ECTS complementary courses that you can choose freely.

Final project

The Master's thesis is an essential part of the programme and it will be constructed in the form of a scientific paper with the aim of having it published in international peer-reviewed journal. After completing the thesis a student is able to carry out  and report a vast empirical study. The scope of the thesis is 35 ECTS credits.

Career opportunities

The programme is designed to prepare students for careers in research centres, medical rehabilitation centres, sport medicine and exercise testing centres, sport academies and physical exercise and sports organisations. Graduates of the programme are also qualified to apply for PhD studies at the higher education institutions in the field.

Qualification

The graduates receive a Master of Sport Sciences degree.

Internationalization

The students come from all over the world and also the teachers have a great deal of international experience.  Students have frequent possibilities to attend lectures by internationally recognized scientists from all over the world. 

Postgraduate study opportunities

This Master’s programme qualifies graduates to continue studying to PhD level and many of our graduates are completing or have completed a PhD, mainly in the field of Sport Sciences.
