To make the most of your studies at the University of Jyväskylä, a smooth day-to-day life is essential. This page offers you information on accommodation, student tutors, cost of living, student restaurants and other services offered to students.

Before the start of your studies

Arrival

How to get to Jyväskylä? The city of Jyväskylä is located in Central Finland, some 270 km north of Helsinki, and can be easily reached by train, coach or plane. Have a safe journey to Jyväskylä!

 

 Accommodation

Comfortable student apartments are located within walking distance or a short bus ride away from the campus. Student housing is offered by the Central Finland Student Housing Foundation (KOAS) and Kortepohja Student Village. Remember to apply well in advance!

Visa and residence permit

Citizens of non-EU/EEA/EFTA countries who wish to stay in Finland for more than three months must be in possession of a residence permit when entering the country. Please apply for the residence permit electronically as soon as you receive the letter of admission.

Cost of living

The cost of living in Finland is around 700 € per month depending of personal spending habits. You can save money by making use of the various discounts and benefits available for Bachelor's and Master's level Student Union members. Student housing in Jyväskylä is inexpensive (study-bedrooms 210-330 €/month). 

Settling down

 Transportation

You can easily get around the city of Jyväskylä by foot, bike or local transportation. When exploring other parts of Finland, take use of the students discounts which are offered on trains and long-distance coaches. If you plan to drive in Finland familiarize yourself with the Finnish traffic regulations.

This three-day programme is designed to help new international students settle in and get to know one another, the University and the city of Jyväskylä.

Language courses

The University Language Centre arranges Finnish language courses for international students before and during the academic year. A wide variety of other language and communication courses are also available, as is support for learning through English. The programme for language learning, Each One Teach One, is a good option for those who want to study independently.

 Campus safety

Finland is considered to be one of the safest countries in the world. Likewise, the campus of the University of Jyväskylä and the city of Jyväskylä provide very safe surroundings for studying and living.

Social activities and leisure time

Your time in Jyväskylä is a great opportunity to attend various events, visit museums, take up a new hobby or perhaps take part in a range of sports activities. The versatile sports possibilities offered by the University Sports are at your disposal by paying the inexpensive sports fee.

Benefits

Student card 

Joining the Student Union and obtaining a student card will entitle you to a wide range of services and benefits. With the student card, you can get for example health care at the Finnish Student Health Service, student-priced meals in student cafeterias and 30-50% off the price in trains and long-distance buses.

Student tutors

Each new international student will be assigned a student tutor. Their task is to acquaint new international students with campus life and to help them with practical questions related to daily life and studies in Jyväskylä.

Student restaurants

There are several student restaurants on campus which offer healthy and inexpensive meals to students. The price of lunch for Bachelor's and Master's level students is 2.60 €.

 

Survival kits

Exchange students living outside Kortepohja Student Village can borrow basic domestics items, so called Survival Kits, against a partly refundable deposit. The service is run by the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä. 

Support services and counselling

Academic Support

The University Library provides extensive database and research material resources, as well as training courses for utilising the available resources. The University’s IT Services provides state-of-the-art computer labs and solutions for data processing.

Friendship family programme

International students have the opportunity to learn more about Finnish culture and experience the Finnish way of life outside the campus by spending part of their free time with their Finnish friendship family.
