In Jyväskylä the conference will be held in Agora, a large, white building on the University of Jyväskylä’s Mattilanniemi Campus (Campus map). The conference site is within walking distance of all official conference hotels. The parking lots surrounding Agora may be used by conference participants on the conference days.

The third day of the conference takes place in Närpes, on the western cost of Finland, at the conference centre Frans Henriksonssalen. There will be return bus transportation Jyväskylä-Närpes for those who have registered for the three conference days.

 The Conference Registration and Info Desk will be located in the lobby (1st floor) of the Agora building on Monday and Tuesday. In Närpes there will not be a separate Conference Info Desk, but you can always consult the conference staff and conference assistants for help.

 On Wednesday 30 August, the meeting point for the buses to Närpes is in front of the Agora building. Conference staff will be there to meet you from 7.30am and the bus will depart at 7.45am sharp (Note: Updated times!) - please be on time because we cannot wait for any latecomers.


All participants must register onsite at the Conference Info Desk during the first conference day in order to receive their conference pack.


All delegates will receive a badge upon onsite registration. The badge entitles you to enter all conference sessions, as well as coffee breaks. We kindly ask you to wear the badge at all times during the conference and also for the evening receptions as well as during the day in Närpes.

Members of the conference staff can be recognized by their blue badges.


There will be several assistants at the conference venue at all times and they are happy to help you with technical issues for your presentation, and with any practical questions you may have during the conference.


Coffee, tea and refreshments will be available for conference participants during the scheduled coffee breaks. They are included in the conference fee, and will be served in the lobby of Agora building during the conference days in Jyväskylä.

Lunches on Monday and Tuesday in Jyväskylä are not included in the conference fee. There are a few restaurants close to the conference venue. You can enjoy your lunch at Restaurant Piato (Agora Building), at Restaurant Wilhelmiina (MaA Building, Ahlmaninkatu 2) or at Restaurant Sodexo Mattilanniemi (Kärki Building, Mattilanniemi 8). All the restaurants are located close to the conference venue. For locations, please consult the Campus map or ask the conference assistants.

 Lunch on Wednesday in Närpes will be served at Hotel Red & Green, inside the conference venue.


At the conference venue Agora in Jyväskylä, there is a wireless network called agora-open, which you can use for browsing the internet and checking your e-mails from your own device. No password is required. Another option is to use Eduroamwhich is a world-wide roaming access service that enables access to the wireless networks of different academic institutions. Logging into the network is done by using the user accounts of each organization that uses eduroam.


English is the official language of the conference. However, we encourage the use of other languages in slides, handouts, etc. Sign language interpretation will also be taking place at the conference. If interpretation is requested for your presentation, you will be contacted in August before the conference and asked to provide further materials (e.g. powerpoint slides) to the interpreters (


Cloakrooms are available at both the Jyväskylä and Närpes venues. The cloakrooms are not attended, so please do not leave your valuables there.

The rooms of the conference sessions are marked in the conference programme. In Agora Building, room numbers starting with 1 are located in the 1st floor and the room numbers starting with 2 are located in the 2nd floor. There will be signs to show you where the conference sessions are located. There will also be timetables next to the conference rooms' doors showing you what takes place and when. Conference staff are also happy to assist you with finding sessions.


A noticeboard will posted near the Conference Info Desk. Possible changes and updates to the programme will be announced on the noticeboard at the start of each conference day. All messages for participants will also be placed on the noticeboard.


Monday, 28 Aug, at 7 pm Welcome reception. All registered delegates are cordially invited to an evening reception. The reception will take place in the Main Building (C Building or Päärakennus), located at Seminaarinkatu 15 on the University of Jyväskylä’s Seminaarinmäki Campus (Campus map). A campus walking tour for conference participants will end at the reception venue.

Tuesday, 29 Aug, at 7 pm, The Conference Dinner will take place in Vanha Asemaravintola, Hannikaisenkatu 18, 40100 Jyväskylä. You are kindly requested to choose your menu by Monday evening; menu options will be shown on the noticeboard near the Info Desk.

Wednesday, 30 Aug, at 4.30-6.00 pm, Visiting outdoor museum in Öjskogsparken


SOPPI; the university shop, service outlet and info desk is located on the Seminaarinmäki Campus next to the University Library (street address Seminaarinkatu 15). The product selection focuses on books and publications, merchandise for students, clothing in the JYU brand, toys in tradition of education and many new products for everyday use and gift purposes (


Most international credit cards (Visa, Eurocard, MasterCard, American Express, Diner’s Club, etc.) are accepted in shops, hotels, and restaurants.  ATMs (Otto in Finnish) can be found on Kauppakatu (pedestrian zone) as well as at the Matkakeskus (train and long distance bus station).


The electric current in Finland is 220V (230V), 50 Hz.


Emergency health care is available at the Central Hospital (Address: Keskussairaalantie 19). For help with first aid, please contact the Conference Info Desk.

The emergency number in Finland is 112.

Local pharmacies (Apteekki) sell prescription-free drugs and remedies.


Smoking is prohibited indoors in public places and on public transportation in Finland. This means that in the campus area you are only allowed to smoke outdoors. Please take note of signs reading TUPAKOINTI KIELLETTY (No smoking).


Tipping is not expected in restaurants, cafés or bars in Finland.


The conference venue is within walking distance of the city centre (1.5 km) and all the official conference hotels (0 km – 1.5 km). Please note that there is no transportation provided by the conference organizers from the hotels to the conference venue.

The Jyväskylä venue, Agora, can also be reached by local bus. From the city centre, take Bus 5 from Stop 6, located on Vapaudenkatu, nearby the pedestrian zone Kauppakatu. This bus stops immediately adjacent to the Agora building at the Mattilanniemi campus (Stop: “Alba 1”). From the same stop, Bus 20 returns directly to the city centre.

Please note that the connections are not very frequent. A single journey ticket costs 3 euros and can be bought directly from the bus driver. A ticket is valid for one transfer within an hour.

The Jyväskylä’s Tourist Information Office is located at Asemakatu 6 (in the city centre close to the hotels and the local transportation station). Staff there can provide you with information on events in Jyväskylä and the surrounding region (movies, museums, exhibitions, concerts, etc.). The daytime temperature in late August is usually between +15 and +25 Celsius, but at night it can sometimes be chilly (even +5 - +10). The sun rises about 6am and sets after 8pm. The weather is highly variable, so please consult weather forecasts.
