How to get to Jyväskylä

NOTE: Make your reservations soon, June is peak season in Finland and trains are getting fully booked.
There is no public transport from the airport to the city center. To book a taxi in advance (recommended),

By train:
There are good connections from Helsinki Airport to Jyväskylä by train. If you buy your ticket early and join VR (Finnish State Railways) free Veturi customer loyalty programme you can buy tickets cheaply. VR train tickets and timetables are available online. The travel time from Helsinki is around 3,5 hours and from Tampere around 1,5 hours. There is also a train connection from Helsinki Airport to Jyväskylä (via Tikkurila station). The trains have a free wifi.

By plane: The international flights fly either to Helsinki Airport or Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. You can continue your trip by train or bus, or fly directly to Jyväskylä. Jyväskylä Airport is located in Tikkakoski which is about 23 km from Jyväskylä city center. The taxi journey from the airport to Jyväskylä costs around 45 euros. You can book a taxi in advance (recommended by the taxi service) or use the free telephone inside the airport to call for a taxi (waiting time 30–50 min).

By bus: If you prefer travelling to Jyväskylä by bus, you can either use Matkahuolto or Onnibus services. Note that Onnibus is faster but their buses from Helsinki depart only from the city centre, whereas Matkahuolto buses also depart directly from Helsinki airport. Most of the busses have a free wifi. If you buy your ticket early you pay less.

By car: Renting a car at Helsinki or Tikkakoski Airport in Jyväskylä is also a convenient way of moving around Finland. In Finland, traffic drives on the right. Roads are generally in a good condition. Distances given on the  traffic signs are in kilometers (1km = 0,62mi). Use of headlights and seat belt is compulsory in Finland, as well as a hands-free device while driving and talking on the phone.

Things to see in Jyväskylä

Alvar Aalto Museum Jyväskylä is the city of world renowned architect Alvar Aalto. To visit the Alvar Aalto Museum is not only to immerse yourself in the world of Aalto’s architecture, design and personal history but it is an architectonic experience of space and building at the same time. There is also a nice café that serves lunch and a gift shop with Alvar Aalto´s design products. By presenting your congress name badge you are entitled to a reduced entrance fee.
Jyväskylä Art Museum A regional art museum of Central Finland. The summer exhibition shows a selection of significant Finnish artwork from between the 1800’s to the 2010’s.
The Craft Museum of Finland A specialized museum for handicraft covering entire Finland.
Toivola Old Courtyard: Artisan’s boutiques and workshops, Café Muisto, and the Museum of Central Finland’s craftsmen’s homes.
Jyväskylä harbour Passenger harbour with an outdoor café, boat restaurants, lake cruises, bike rental and water sport, located near the congress venue Paviljonki.
Petäjävesi Old Church UNESCO World Heritage Site, an prime example of northern wooden architecture unique to eastern Scandinavia. 30 minutes drive from city center.
Laajavuori Outdoor Centre Numerous outdoor activities, nature trails and small Vuorilampi beach with sauna. Beautiful scene over Jyväskylä city, lakes and forests from the top of the Laajavuori hill. Bus number 25 runs to Laajavuori from the city center.
Kauppakatu Main street with a number of restaurants, shops and cafés.
Sokos A department store with well equipped grocery store and liquore store at the bottom floor.
Marimekko World famous Finnish design brand renowned for its original prints and colours, high-quality clothing, bags and accessories as well as home décor items.
