XLIV Finnish Conference of Linguistics 2017 at Jyväskylä

18-20 May 2017

Finland 100 years – Aspects to the history and the future of linguistics

The XLIV Finnish Conference of Linguistics will be held in Jyväskylä on 18-20 May 2017. The theme of the conference is Finland 100 years – Aspects to the history and the future of linguistics In particular, we welcome presentations and workshops that address Finland, the Finnish language/languages in Finland and the Finnish linguistics, as well as presentations that tie these topics into the larger context.

The invited speakers at the conference are Professor Emeritus Heikki Paunonen (The University of Tampere) and Professor John Joseph (The University of Edinburgh).

The central theme of the presentation can be, for instance, one of the following:

  • The history of the Finnish linguistics and its relation to linguistic thinking outside Finland: what has influenced us, how have different approaches reached Finland,  or what and how has the Finnish linguistics contributed to the rest of the world?
  • Finnish linguists – or classics in the Finnish linguistics
  • Modern-day Finland and the Finnish linguistics of today: how does linguistics take a stand – or should it take a stand – on current social and educational issues?
  • The Finnish language: why is research on the Finnish language needed and how can this research contribute to linguistics in general?

In addition to submissions that address the conference theme, we invite section papers, workshops and poster presentations on all aspects of linguistic research.

Section paper: The abstract should not exceed 300 words. Individual papers have 30 minutes (20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for discussion)

Poster: The abstract should not exceed 300 words. The maximum size of the poster is A0 (poster wall: height 130 cm * width 97 cm).

The organiser of the workshop should submit a general description (max 500 words), including the titles of the presentations in the workshop. In case of acceptance, those presenting in the workshop will be asked to submit an abstract of max 300 words on their presentation.
