Miika Tervonen, PhD

Miika Tervonen is a university researcher and Docent at the University of Helsinki. Tervonen’s research and teaching centres on nationalism, ethnic relations and migration, and combines historical and social science perspectives. Tervonen has been awarded Vuoden tiedekynä prize (2017) for his examination of the myth of a culturally homogeneous Finland, and the Finnish State Award for Public Information (2013) for contribution to the critically acclaimed Suomen romanien historia (‘History of the Finnish Roma’, SKS 2012). He currently works in an Academy of Finland –funded project Insecure lives, examining the politics and media representations of precarious EU migrants, many of whom are ethnic Roma. Tervonen received his Doctorate degree at the European University Institute, Italy, and has worked as a visiting scholar at the Columbia University and London School of Economics.
