As part of the symposium “Uses of the Past – Menneisyyspolitiikat” organized at the University of Jyväskylä on November 9-10, we welcome doctoral candidates on November 8 to the half-day pre-symposium workshop. The aim of the training workshop is to urge participants to discuss politics of the past in the context of their doctoral research. We encourage submissions that critically explore the intersections of the past, present and future. The papers can include (but are not limited to) topics like politics of memory, belonging, nostalgia and cultural narratives.

Max 250 word abstracts can be written in English or Finnish and should focus on the politics of the past and intersections of the past, present and future in your doctoral research. Please send an abstract together with one page summary of your doctoral thesis by 18 September 2017 to sigrid.s.kaasik-krogerus@jyu.fi Notification of acceptance will be communicated by 22 September.

Full paper

In the full paper of maximum 5 pages you can approach the intersections of the past, present and future from a methodological, theoretical or conceptual perspective related to your doctoral research. Alternatively, a chosen case can be used to deal with the topic. The paper can be written in English or Finnish. The deadline for the full papers is 25 October 2017.


Doctoral training workshop takes place on 8 November 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the University of Jyväskylä. The main aim of the workshop is to discuss the papers for creating new ideas and perspectives related to uses of the past. The workshop also offers a possibility for networking with your fellow candidates as well as post-doctoral and senior scholars who perform as commentators of the papers.
