M.Sc. Di Zhang defends her doctoral dissertation in Mathematical Information Technology "Virtual Resource Sharing Mechanisms in Software Defined and Virtualized Wireless Network". Opponent Professor Tarik Taleb (Aalto University) and Custos Professor Timo Hämäläinen (University of Jyväskylä). The doctoral dissertation is held in English.

A digital transformation, fueled by the power of mobility, cloud and broadband, is taking place in almost everywhere. New use cases such as high definition (HD) videos, virtual reality (VR), automated driving, IoT etc. emerging for consumers, enterprises and industries. This calls for a revolution of system architecture and opens for new business opportunities for both network providers and operators.

Di Zhang concentrates in his research on promoting the collaboration of network operators. With the cooperation, both capital and operational expense can be significantly reduced, and meanwhile, the users’ digital requirements can be satisfied based on their service demands. In other words, the operators can gain more profit through cooperation instead of competition.

On the way towards offering this kind of platform for collaboration, a software-defined and virtualized networking architecture was developed. To ensure the fairness, benefits and privacy of the operators, a series of methods based on auction theory and contract theory has also been developed. Di Zhang received the B.Eng. degree in automation in 2011 and the M.Eng. degree in system engineering from Northeastern University, Shenyang, China, in 2013. She is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in wireless communications with the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Her research interests include game theoretic approaches, radio resource management, wireless virtualization, and software-defined networking.
