Knowledge and use of numerical relations with mobile devices: towards a new “spatial visual” way to complement the present “textual” way.

Currently, in order to perform numerical calculations, we are still using the resources (paper, pencils, calculators, spreadsheets ...) from last millennium with textual codes and traditional methodologies. The tools are based on logical-mathematical analysis of symbols, linear irreversible flow of actions based on serialized presentation that does not support visualizing of complex dependencies.

Digital natives have mobile devices that are ready for new methodologies that promote visual-spatial intelligence, exploit two-dimensional presentation and flow of actions to arbitrary directions.

Interactive Workshop for Potential Developers

Mobile Numbers Technology (MNT) is the most successful joint effort with students at University of Girona and Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya: more than 25 students from internship program. Furthermore, papers and communications from international congress, H2020 participation (Germany, Catalonia-Spain…).

MNT is free for educational use: it opens new ways to professors in order to teach STEM and it delivers innovative fields to researchers. The web site (nowadays as α with limited access) will provide all the information to work with: features, pilot apps, albums… with a protocol (rules to comply with in order to be understood by everybody). With university technology transfer, professors and researchers have their own new way to complement the present way to deal with numerical relations (math).

Barcelona, mobile world capital, has been the starting point; now, Finland takes the lead for education with mobile devices.

1. Introduction and experiences

  • Nobody wants to use pencil and paper to perform numerical formulas
  • Calculations in calculators and spreadsheets are not reversible and require ordered processing of symbols

JUSTIFICATION: the use of visual-spatial intelligence

This lecture belongs to a plan of presentations in various cities: Barcelona, Madrid, Jyvaskyla (Finland), Tallinn (Estonia), etc. with objective to present mobile technology for numerical relations deployed by professionals and academics from various universities (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, University of Girona, Jyvaskyla University...) and Institutes. It will also show the ongoing initiative to expand the collaborative environment with professors and teachers.

The lecture is followed-up with hands on demonstration and discussion: Friday, 8 June from 10:15 to 12:00.

Workshop about Mobile Numbers Technology

Workshop and training sessions in order to know the technology. A way to complement present knowledge and use of numerical relations with visual spatial intelligence.

  • The basics: positional status, versatile formula, the operations SUMRES, MULDIV , the inverse…
  • The static approach. The map as the way where formula and its relationship are represented.
  • The dynamic approach. With paths the different results are shown.
