M.Sc. Xueyan Li defends her doctoral dissertation in Cognitive Science "Haha Moments – Applying Brain Research to Technology Design". photo.JPGEmotion problems are very damaging and far-reaching, affecting millions of people worldwide. More attempts should have been made by design researchers to form innovative and feasible design concepts against current technological contexts to produce practical technical artifact to help solve this serious issue.

Humor, exerting positive influences on both physical and mental health and influencing every aspect concerning social interactions, is worth investigating. Studies on the cognitive process of humor appreciation help to apply the Neuroscience research to the Design Science research, providing knowledge base, effective tool and objective evaluations to facilitate the creative design processes with solid and reliable evidence, and leading to the transfer of positive influences of humor into an effective technical artifact to assist people in mediating their emotion problems.

Rather than focusing on technological solutions in this emotional design concept, the current study was more immersed in the problem itself to recognize the needs of the potential users via the analysis of Form-of-Life, which prevented us from being constrained by software solutions in isolation, suggesting more practical and objective solutions to the problem.

On the basis of Life-Based Design theory, the desired emotion design concept, presented in 5Rs Model, was proposed by integrating with the emerging EEG-based Brain Computer Interfaces to provide a “three in one” system, including real-time recording, feedback and intervention strategy, resorting to mobile phone as the main media connecting the users and technological artifact, and laying the first stone for the implementation of future relevant technical artifacts.
