uMove – Sweat and fun in Academic Sports activities

Acedemic Sports in Jyväskylä has published its programme for the autumn and is ready to receive new and old participants from 10 September. In the various activities, you can train in a goal-oriented way with a high pulse rate or take care of your well-being more gently, having yoga or trips to nature, for example.

The basic idea and mission of Academic Sports is to reach all kinds of people. The services are not only for high-performing athletes and talented players, but also for those who are less familiar with exercise and need support at the initial stage. Irrespective of the particular sport or activity in question, the point is to get positive feelings and experiences from physical activity.

This Autumn Academic Sports refreshes its look and has already published the new  symbol uMove.

The new programme includes group fitness classes and ballgame guidance for beginners

The new EASY category sessions offer beginners an easy way to enter group activities. The sessions have a minimal threshold for joining and they start from basics, dealing with correct techniques in more detail. Other novelties in the group activity programme for this autumn include, for example, Pilates, jazz vibes and barre as well as a guided session for circular training at gym.

uMove3-palloilu.pngFor ballgames, beginners are offered “STARTTI” start-up sessions, which always have a skilled instructor present. Other University Sports ballgame sessions are self-directed. In addition, JYU students and staff can apply for sport facility sessions for their own groups for this academic year.

The autumn programme also includes the “Exercise with pleasure” course to support students to take sports as part of their daily life. Course participants get peer support from the group and can try out different types of sports according to their own interests, guided by an expert. The aim is to find a personal relationship to physical activity.

ECTS credits available through sport activities and free sessions for staff

JYU students can also take up sport activities and try out different sports for free as part of their studies.

–The sports course embedded in study programmes is our flagship, describes Anneli Mörä-Leino, Head of University Sports.

uMove-steppi-web.jpgStudents get two ECTS credits for attending 15 events of their preference from the large course selection. There is no time limit for accomplishing the course: attendance is possible anytime at your own pace. Most often the course is taken within one term or academic year. The course is completed by about 100 students every year.

For JYU staff, there are eight free-of-charge group fitness sessions available per week.

Furthermore, it pays to check the course menu as it includes a variety of interesting things, such as Korean pop-dance, crossfit, air yoga, mindfulness, tour skating and swimming techniques.

The season starts with a free Workout event on 8 September.

Head of University Sports Anneli Mörä-Leino and Sports Coordinators Henna Törmänen and Hanna Savander are looking forward to the start of the new academic year.

–We wish that our programme makes as many as possible to enjoy physical activity this autumn.

The Academic Sports season starts on Saturday, 8 September, with the Workout event. In the event, people can try out different types of sports for free. A bit later, 17–23 September, we will have a theme week for getting familiar with Academic Sports. During this week, the group fitness classes and ballgame sessions are available for free.
