Welcome to the DEMO seminar on different aspects of Decision Analytics! DEMO (Decision Analytics utilizing Causal Models and Multiobjective Optimization) is a profiling area of the University of Jyväskylä focusing on different elements of data-driven decision support, http://www.jyu.fi/demo. This seminar is aimed at all those who are interested in using data in different ways in decision making.

A change in marital status affects the number of daily steps: the men who divorced and the women who found a new partner reduced their physical activity

According to a recent study, changes in relationships have links to physical activity. The total number of non-exercise steps was reduced during a four-year follow-up study for men who divorced. For women who found a new spouse between the measurement points, the total steps decreased significantly when compared to women married throughout the period.

Get study credits from volunteer work with asylum seekers

The students of JYU have a chance at getting study credits from volunteer work with asylum seekers. Focus on this course is put on interacting, listening and finnish civil society skills. For students this is also an opportunity to learn more about communication, building dialogue and teaching civics.

Tommi Jantunen appointed as Professor of Finnish Sign Language

The Rector of the University of Jyväskylä Keijo Hämäläinen has appointed PhD, Docent Tommi Jantunen as Professor of Finnish Sign Language from 1 December 2018. The professorship is placed in the Department of Language and Communication Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Passive exposure alone can enhance the learning of foreign speech sounds

Ability to understand and subsequently speak a new language requires the ability to accurately discriminate speech sounds of a given language. When we start to learn a new language the differences between speech sounds can be very difficult to perceive. With enough active practice the ability to discriminate the speech sounds enhances.
