Katja Sorri appointed the HR Director of the University of Jyväskylä

MSc (Econ.) Katja Sorri has been appointed as the HR Director of the University of Jyväskylä. Sorri moves to JYU from Mediatalo Keskisuomalainen and will start in the new position on 23 January 2019.

Sorri has completed her master’s degree in Economics and Business Administration at JYU in 1999. She has also studied Organizational Communication & Public Relations at JYU and has a teacher’s qualification from the university of applied sciences and an HR manager qualification from the Institute of Marketing in 2018.

She worked for Keskisuomalainen nine years and was responsible for the company’s HR operations and internal communications. Her duty was to support the management of 22 business units and more than 100 supervisors of the group. Before that she worked eight years as a lecturer for JAMK University of Applied Sciences and Tiimiakatemia.

Sorri finds the transfer to JYU as a natural progress in her career and an opportunity for development.

“The JYU HR Director duties are in line with my personal principles.I am happy that I can be part of a societally significant educational and research community.It is important for me to be in a working environment in which I can influence and create something meaningful,” Sorri says.

The University’s new strategy will focus on the skills and wellbeing of people. The most important task of the HR director is to support the implementation of the strategy by developing an open and encouraging operating culture and HR leadership in the community.

“In the coming years we really want to invest in our staff and students. HR Director will have a big role in this work, and I believe Katja’s skills and experience will lead us to great results,” says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen.

HR Director’s duties include human resource planning, recruitment and the maintenance and development of the staff’s competence and wellbeing. She will also have an important role to develop and maintain the University’s employer image. HR Director will support both the academic and support services staff and management. The employment relationship is valid until further notice with a trial period of six months.
