JYU exceeded the target for master’s and doctoral degrees in 2018

Doctoral education at the University of Jyväskylä works excellently. Once again, the University exceeded its target for the number of doctoral degrees. The University had in total new 139 doctors last year. In 2017, the number was 148. The University has exceeded the target for doctoral degrees every year in the 2010s.

The target for master’s degrees was exceeded clearly, the total number being 1,513. In the previous year the number of master’s degrees was 1,475. The number of completed candidate’s degrees was 1,220 (1,344 in 2017).

The Faculty of Mathematics and Science (38), the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (32) and the Faculty of Education and Psychology (28) achieved the highest numbers of completed doctoral degrees.They were followed by the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences (17), the Faculty of Information Technology (13) and the School of Business and Economic (11).

The faculties with the highest numbers of master’s degrees were the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (407) and the Faculty of Education and Psychology (403). They were followed by the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences (232) and the School of Business and Economics (167).The Faculty of Information Technology had 154 master’s graduates and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science 150.

The University’s targets for 2017–2020, agreed with the Ministry of Education and Culture, are on average 1,475 masters and 138 doctors per year. The average target of bachelor’s degrees is 1,360 degrees per year.
