The Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the Department of Biological and Environmental Science of the University of Jyväskylä organize the annual international Winter School of Ecology at Research Station of Konnevesi on 9th – 20th February 2015. The 8th Jyväskylä Winter School of Ecology gathers around 30 of advanced Master’s level students, and doctoral students from various countries.

The Winter School of Ecology offers two courses. The first course, ”Boreal Winter Ecology”, deals with dynamics in physical and biotic environment in boreal and subarctic winter. The students have excellent possibilities for experimental work with aquatic and terrestrial animals and plants. The course includes an excursion to the Pyhähäkki national park. Title of the second course is ”Population Ecology and Population Cycles". The course focuses on diversity of population cycles and individual faiths in fluctuating populations. The courses are lectured by Finnish teachers, who are top experts in their fields.

The 8th Jyväskylä Winter School ends with the international workshop (18.-20.2.2015) “Fear, individuals and populations”. This year around 50 participants will join in the workshop. The farthest of them come from Australia, Canada, Israel, and United States.

The most important aims of the Winter School are graduate students’ scientific readiness, close integration with the international science community, building networks, winter field work, and to create connections to the international science community.
