Marja Järvelä and Ilkka Ratinen appointed to the Finnish Climate Panel

Professor Emerita Marja Järvelä and lecturer Ilkka Ratinen from the University of Jyväskylä were appointed to the Finnish Climate Panel. The panel continues to support the preparation of climate and energy policy with a new composition. On 21 January 2016, the Government appointed a new panel of 15 members for the next four-year term, to be chaired by Markku Ollikainen, Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of Helsinki. The first panel was appointed in December 2011.

The work of the new panel is based on the Climate Change Act that entered into force on 1 June 2015. According to the Act, the panel supports climate policy planning and related decision-making. The panel compiles scientific information on climate change mitigation and adaptation to facilitate the implementation and follow-up of the Climate Change Act, and an opinion of the panel is required for plans under the Act. During the present government term, the Panel will also give its opinion on the medium-term climate policy plan to be completed in spring 2017.

The Panel represents broad knowledge on both natural and social sciences to ensure that it possesses the necessary expertise for managing the tasks specified in the act.
