The 2017 Best Global Universities rankings announced – JYU among the top 500

The University of Jyväskylä’s position in the Best Global Universities ranking has stayed just about the same as last year as it was ranked 472nd globally and 206th among European universities. Last year the corresponding figures were 465 and 202.

This global ranking by U.S. News & World Report is based on such indicators as research reputation and the number of publications and citations. The new edition includes country, regional and subject-specific rankings. This year the comparison lists 1,000 universities instead of the 750 listed last year. A total of nine Finnish universities were included.

Among Finnish universities, JYU dropped one spot to sixth. As for the subject-specific rankings, JYU deserved a spot in Physics (297th globally) as well as in Social Sciences and Public Health (349th globally). Just as last year, the University of Helsinki (91st  globally and 28th in Europe) and Aalto University (286th globally and 126th in Europe) were ranked the best in Finland. In addition to the aforementioned universities, the list includes the University of Turku (position 328), the University of Eastern Finland (394), the University of Oulu (418), the University of Tampere (530) and the Tampere University of Technology (695). The Lappeenranta University of Technology is this year’s newcomer, ranked 576th globally.

The best three universities on the global list are Harvard, MIT and Stanford in the USA. The European list is topped by the British universities Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London.

U.S. News & World Report, which now published its third global comparison, has published rankings of US domestic universities for over 30 years.
