Title: Genetic strategies towards personalized medicine

Medical research is increasingly based on mining huge amounts of data. A new field of research has emerged alongside traditional laboratory research, based on analysing data which is produced elsewhere. The genomeic medicine is a central example of this.

As the techniques of genome analysis have developed, the bottleneck has moved from producing data to analysing data. The Nordic countries, especially Finland, have exceptional possibilities in the genome research.

The history of human settlement in Finland, comprehensive health registers, biobanks and well advanced regulatory environment enable exceptional research settings to examine the genetic background related to diseases. Studying the huge genome and health data pools of even hundreds of thousands of people makes it possible to understand diseases better, apply personalised medicine and enhance the production of new medicines.
