The University Collegium elected Aki Kangasharju, D.Sc. (Econ.), Kaisa Oksanen, Ph.D., and Chancellor Emerita Krista Varantola, Ph.D., as the external members of the University Board for the term of office 1 January 2018–31 December 2019.

Aki Kangasharju completed his doctoral degree at the University of Jyväskylä in 1998. He has worked as a researcher for Pellervon taloustutkimus PTT from 1997 to 2001, as director general, research professor and research director for VATT Institute for Economic Research from 2001 to 2012, and as head of research and chief economist for Nordea since 2012. In 2000, Kangasharju was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. In addition, he has been a member of the board of Tekes since 2014.

Kaisa Oksanen is an alumna of the University of Jyväskylä. She received her doctoral degree in Social Sciences from the City University of Hong Kong in 2009. Since 2015, she has worked as a senior specialist in the political analysis unit of the Prime Minister’s Office, where she coordinates the development and management of national foresight cooperation. Previously she has worked for, among others, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland from 2014 to 2015 as a senior researcher and for Agora Center as a research coordinator from 2009 to 2013.

Krista Varantola is a chancellor emerita and a professor emerita in English from the University of Tampere, and her special field is the theory and practice of translation. She has worked as a member of the University Board of the University of Jyväskylä from August 2014. Krista Varantola was the rector of the University of Tampere from 1 August 2004 to 31 July 2009, the second vice rector from 1996 to 1997 and the first vice rector from 1998 to 1999. From 1 August 2009 to 31 July 2014, she was the chancellor of the University of Tampere. From 2008 to 2015, Varantola was a member of the Advisory Board of the rector of the University of Gothenburg.

Krista Varantola is the chair of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity and the chair of NordForsk’s Education for Tomorrow Programme Committee. She is also a member of the Council of Finnish Academies and a member of the boards of All European Academies (ALLEA) and the European Women Rectors Association (EWORA) as well as a member of the ALLEA Permanent Working Group on Science and Ethics and the group of European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

In its meeting of 25 January 2017, the University Collegium decided that the number of members in the University Board is seven and that the term of office for members external to the University is 1 January 2018–31 December 2019. The University Collegium will confirm the members of different staff groups and the student member in autumn.  

In addition, the University Collegium decided on the number of members from different groups of the University community as follows:

The number of members from the group of professors for the term of office 1 January 2018–31 December 2021 is two, the number of members from the group of other teaching and research staff for the term 1 January 2018–31 December 2021 is one, and the number of members from the group of students for the term of office 1 January 2018–31 December 2019 is one.
