The Jyväskylä Summer School as a gateway to internationalizing

The Jyväskylä Summer School is a yearly, two-week event which brings hundreds of students to Jyväskylä from all around the world.  The Summer School is organized by Faculties of Mathematics and Science and Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä for the 27th time on Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne campuses between the 7th and 18th of August.

In the present multilinguistic and cross-cultural society, experience of foreign cultures and habits is an important part of anyone’s learning path. The Summer School assists students in increasing their readiness for international activity. The School also enriches the scientific community, offers an environment for new ideas and innovations, enables forming new connections and improves language and communication skills. It offers a great opportunity to present the education, research and capabilities of University of Jyväskylä, and increase the travel appeal of Jyväskylä. The Summer School gives a positive picture of Jyväskylä as a friendly and co-operative international scientific center to the international visitors. This could also inspire the international guests to come back to Jyväskylä.

Internationality without travelling

Internationalization inside one’s own home region can help reach the international skills needed in subsequent studies as well as in domestic and international labour markets. The Summer School offers the students and the researchers of University of Jyväskylä a possibility to internationalize without being a day abroad. Half of the students in the Summer School are Jyväskylä University’s own students.

The best know-how obtained by the University

Programme includes 20 courses in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics, Nanosciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Information Systems and Computational Sciences. As many as 26 international top level lecturers are responsible for teaching. These guest lecturers will share their expertise and their most effective advice.

The social programme supports networking

The upbeat atmosphere of the Summer School will create favourable conditions for learning.  A versatile and plentiful social programme offers great possibilities for experiencing Finnish nature and culture. It also gives a very good opportunity to meet new people and make friends. The Summer School Opening Ceremony will be held on Monday 7th of August on a cruise, allowing the participants to enjoy scenes of Lake Jyväsjärvi along with the party. Professor Emeritus Matti Leino’s public lecture on the history, fundamentals and the significance of making elements, and the experiments performed in the field during the past 40 years, will be held on Thursday 10th of August at 5 p.m. The Summer School ends with a farewell party concert “Rock after Research”. The concert is open to the public and will take place in the Student Union building Ilokivi on Wednesday 16th of August
