New company to promote entrepreneurship in Jyväskylä

The City of Jyväskylä, the University of Jyväskylä, JAMK University of Applied Sciences and the Jyväskylä Educational Consortium are establishing a new joint company to support entrepreneurship and related education.

For years, the educational institutions have cooperated to promote entrepreneurship. For example, in 2013 they created a common entrepreneurship strategy. The Ideasta kasvuun (Idea to growth) project of Jyväskylän Yritystehdas (Jyväskylä Business and Innovation Factory) and EduFutura cooperation of the institutions have increased the need to deepen cooperation related to entrepreneurship and create a clear operating model for it.

Through the new company, the owners are able to centralise and clarify their entrepreneurship operations as well as reduce overlapping functions, utilise resources efficiently and create diversified entrepreneurship teams. The JAMK Generator operations and service models will transfer to the new company. The City of Jyväskylä’s services for new companies, the best operating models from the Ideasta kasvuun (Idea to growth) project and the skills of the educational institutions and students help to create a lively and active ecosystem for start-ups.

The new company assists, activates and coaches students in issues related to entrepreneurship, creates preconditions for new businesses and supports the growth of start-up companies in Jyväskylä. The company offers coaching and training in how to plan and start business activity, various incubator services and services that promote innovation activity and student employability. It operates as a development and coaching environment for new companies heading to domestic or international markets as well as for teams and operators that develop business based on research.

The goal is that the company will be an innovative and visible operator in its field and have strong connections to the business world and other operators in the field. The operating model is novel in Finland and provides great opportunities to create entrepreneurship and strengthen the regional competence cluster. Thousands of students and other people interested in entrepreneurship will use the company’s services.

The establishment of the company will be proposed for approval to the boards of the City and the educational institutions within the next few weeks: the City board on 28 August, the JAMK board on 28 August, the University of Jyväskylä board on 5 September and the board of the Jyväskylä Educational Consortium on 7 September.

The operation of the new company has been planned to start in September 2017. The recruitment of a managing director will start immediately after the establishment of the company has been approved. Venture Development Finland Ltd operates as an advisor for the shareholders in the planning and start-up phase, CEO Jukka Lassila and senior advisors Kari Muhli and Marko Sorri carrying main responsibility for the project.
