JUNE 18–21, 2018

IOHA 2018 Memory & Narration Conference gathers the foremost researchers of oral history to Jyväskylä this summer when the University of Jyväskylä hosts the 20th annual conference of the International Oral History Association.

The theme of the XX IOHA Conference is Memory and Narration. The conference focuses on the complex and multidimensional nature of oral history, and we welcome presentations from diverse perspectives. We invite papers that focus on methodological issues concerning the production and analysis of oral histories and life stories. We especially encourage contributions related to oral history sources as narratives/narration and applications of methodological theories and practices.

The XX IOHA Conference coincides with the anniversary of two important events in Finnish history, the centennial of the 1918 Finnish Civil War as well as the end of World War I. The congress organizers therefore welcome also contributions that address memories of wars and other conflicts, narratives of survival, intergenerational war memories and communities of commemoration.

The keynote speakers for the conference are Professor Paula Hamilton from University of Technology, Sydney, Australia; Associate Professor Ene Kõresaar from the University of Tartu, Estonia; Dr. Shelley Trower, Senior Lecturer at the University of Roehampton, UK; and Professor Alessandro Portelli, Professor of American Literature (ret.) from the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italy.

The XX IOHA Conference is hosted by The Finnish Oral History Network, University of Jyväskylä, and the Finnish Literature Society. It will be held June 18-21, 2018 at the congress center Paviljonki.
