THE ranking: Education among the world’s best, also social sciences ranked high

Education at the University of Jyväskylä was ranked 84th among the best universities in the world. Times Higher Education – World University Rankings listed the best 400 universities in the field of Education. Respectively, JYU’s Social Sciences was positioned 201–250 in its field.

From Finnish universities JYU and the University of Helsinki were in the ranking for education. The best university in the ranking was Stanford (USA). In social sciences JYU was ranked second from the five Finnish universities in the ranking. The best university in this category was Oxford.

The world’s leading universities in the fields of education and teacher training were assessed in the THE ranking. In the field of social sciences, the ranking assessed communication and media studies, politics, international development studies, sociology and geography.

The central weightings for the rankings were teaching, research and citations to publications. In the field of education, especially the indicators of teaching and learning were emphasised. External financing and internationality were evaluated as well, and in social sciences especially the international reputation of research. Last year, education was assessed under the category of social sciences in the ranking.
