IBM and University of Jyväskylä to start a common innovation unit based on cutting-edge technologies

A new innovation unit, which will be launched in the Faculty of Information Technology, marks a new chapter in the collaboration between IBM and JYU. The unit will focus on cutting-edge technologies developed by IBM.

This collaboration concerns many areas of research and education:

  • cyber security
  • IoT (Internet of Things)
  • artificial intelligence
  • cognitive analysis
  • blockchain technology
  • virtual reality
  • robotics
  • quantum computing

The University of Jyväskylä and IBM already have ongoing collaboration with the goal of advancing the knowledge and skills of cognitive computing in Finland. The partnership between the University and IBM began on 28 August 2015 with the Academic Initiative programme. In 2016 the partnership was extended to two new projects financed by Tekes: Value from Public Health Data with Cognitive Computing, and the Watson Health Cloud Finland.

- Our collaboration with IBM has gone extremely well, and more than 300 students have already been acquainted with IBM Watson AI technology, Dean Pekka Neittaanmäki rejoices.

- The University’s broadening collaboration is tied to the University’s core fields, and it boosts education and research activity in the Faculty of Information Technology. I find it very valuable that we are extending our collaboration with this research-driven, global IT company, says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen.

- This new project marks a significant strategic leap in our collaboration with JYU. The innovation unit will help bring about new skills and know-how needed in the digital era in Finland. In our joint research projects, we wish to innovate new solutions drawing on modern new technologies. The innovation unit will bring together the scientific community and the ecosystems of industry and research, says Maarit Palo, IBM Finland’s Executive of Government Affairs and University Relations.
