University of Jyväskylä

Deans of the University of Jyväskylä appointed for 2018–2021

After hearing the faculty councils, the Rector of the University of Jyväskylä Keijo Hämäläinen has named the deans of faculties for the term of office from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021. The deans are:

  • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Professor Minna-Riitta Luukka
  • Faculty of Information Technology Professor Pasi Tyrväinen
  • Faculty of Education and Psychology Professor Anna-Maija Poikkeus
  • Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics Professor Hanna-Leena Pesonen
  • Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences Professor Ari Heinonen
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Science Professor Mikko Mönkkönen

 – The University has excellent new deans, says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen.

 – The preparation groups of dean selection have worked very carefully. The quality of the proposals proves that the workgroups and faculty councils have had good discussions and that they have considered the required competences and selection criteria thoroughly, Hämäläinen adds.

– It is safe and easy for me to concur with the excellent proposals of faculties. I am especially pleased about the even distribution of genders in the deanship, which is rare at Finnish universities. I hope that the renewed procedure has increased the openness of the dean selection process and that the University community feels it has genuinely been able to influence leader selections important to the whole University.

The dean positions are full-time. In addition to faculty management, deans are part of the University Management Team and, thus, broadly responsible for the development of the whole University. Each dean will appoint two vice deans responsible for research and innovation activities and education at the faculty. In addition to faculty management teams, vice deans participate, according to their responsibility areas, in the Science Council and the Education Council led by vice rectors.
