Top-level international recruitment in applied linguistics to Jyväskylä

Professor Srikant Sarangi has been appointed as part-time visiting professor to ReCLaS – Research Collegium for Language in Changing Society, the JYU profiling area in applied language studies. Professor Sarangi is a prominent researcher in applied linguistics, with special expertise in professional and institutional discourse.  He held the position of Professor in Language and Communication at Cardiff University between 1993 and 2013, where he continues as Honorary Professor. Since 2013, he has been Professor of Humanities and Medicine at Aalborg University. Concurrently with Aalborg, Cardiff and Jyväskylä, he is also affiliated with Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim and the College of Medicine at Qatar University. Between 2013 and 2016, he was Visiting Research Professor in the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine at The University of Hong Kong, and since 2013 he has been Visiting Professor under the Academic Icon scheme at University of Malay. In recognition of his contributions to the field of ‘applied linguistics’ and ‘language/communication studies’, in 2012 he was awarded the title of ‘Fellow’ by the Academy of Social Sciences, UK.

Professor Sarangi is the chief editor of three highly acclaimed international journals: TEXT & TALK - An Interdisciplinary Journal of Language, Discourse and Communication Studies; Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice; and Communication and Medicine.

Professor Sarangi has longstanding collaborative networks with the University of Jyväskylä and he knows the Finnish research scene well. He has, for example, been involved in research field evaluation with the Academy of Finland and in 2015, was nominated as an international member in the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters.

The core task of the ReCLaS Collegium is to advance the field by engaging in multidisciplinary research to explore the role of language in changing societies. “As Professor Sarangi has extensive worldwide experience in both multidisciplinary cooperation and societally relevant research, his role in supporting the strategic development and international connections of the profiling area will be important. We are indeed very happy to have him in the team”, say ReCLaS directors Tarja Nikula-Jäntti and Anne Pitkänen-Huhta.

On the occasion of this appointment, Professor Sarangi comments: “It’s a particularly nice feeling to be reconnected to the applied linguistics scene at JYU. I see the ongoing profiling activity under the rubric of ReCLaS as a culmination of past accomplishments and a projection of things to come. The recognition of applied linguistics at JYU as a profiling area affords a life-time opportunity to recalibrate the field as we know it in Finland and elsewhere. I very much look forward to playing a part in this worthwhile venture.”
