International Student Barometer: study experience at JYU one of the best in the world

According to the International Student Barometer (ISB) survey, the international students of the University of Jyväskylä are very satisfied with their studies at the University and life in Jyväskylä.

In total 90.3% of responded international students at JYU were satisfied with their study experience, and even as many as 94.5% would recommend the University to new applicants and future students.

- It is delightful that we have international students who, as the research data proves, are very satisfied with their studies and life in Jyväskylä. The results reflect the high level of our education and long-term effort to develop our services. For example, we had excellent reviews for the way we receive arriving students to Jyväskylä and the campus, says Marja-Leena Laakso, Vice Rector responsible for education. - The barometer results also give guidelines how to develop our operations. Even though international students feel at home here, we still have work to do to develop their connections to the world of work and integrate them to Finnish society, Laakso says.

The ISB survey, implemented in autumn 2017, focuses on measuring student experience and satisfaction. It investigates four categories: learning experience and teaching, accommodation and living, study support services and arrival services. The barometer provides data about the experiences and satisfaction of foreign students in comparison to the experiences of students in other Finnish and foreign higher education institutions participating in the barometer.

In the categories of learning and teaching as well as accommodation and living, JYU students rated their experience as one of the best in Finland. Moreover, in the category living overall, JYU was the best in international comparison. These categories measure student satisfaction in the quality of teaching, teaching and studying facilities, multiculturalism, accommodation, living costs, satisfaction of life and integration with local society, among others. JYU managed well in the barometer also in arrival services, in which our students were the most satisfied in Finland and Europe, and on the 8th position globally. The study support services of JYU were ranked third in Finland and tenth internationally.

The ISB survey was responded by almost 110,000 students from 120 higher education institutes from all over the world. From Finland, the study included 15 higher education institutions and 6,650 respondents. The University of Jyväskylä had in total 398 respondents (percentage 38%), including exchange students and master’s and doctoral students. The study was carried out by International Graduate Insight Group Ltd.
