In compliance with the Rector’s proposal, the Board decided to appoint Päivi Seppä, Master of Administrative Sciences, for the position of a director of administration from 1 April 2018. In the same connection, the Board decided to change the job title to Finance and Service Director since it describes better the renewed leadership and service structure. Finance and Service Director will carry out the duties of the director of administration as described in the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and other administrative decisions until the regulations and decisions have been updated to indicate the change.

-          The recruitment process involved both open applications and headhunting, and we got very high-level top candidates for the position. Päivi Seppä proved to be the best choice because of her broad expertise and strong knowledge of universities. I am convinced that the appointment of a person with strong financial expertise and long experience in university administration brings stability to our extensively renewed management system, says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen.

Päivi Seppä has worked for the University of Jyväskylä as a director of finance (from 2012), a financial manager (2001–2012) and a head of financial accounting (1997–2001). Before that, she worked, for example, as a financial secretary for the University of Helsinki. Seppä completed her master’s degree at the University of Tampere, majoring in financial administration and public sector accounting. At the University of Jyväskylä, she has studied economics and accounting. Her positions of trust include, for example, the vice-chairmanship of the board of Certia, the financial and personnel administration service centre.

Finance and Service Director reports to the Rector and is responsible for coordinating the University’s finance and services. The director leads University Services, which produces services that support the University’s operations and serves as a general preparative and executional body for the University Board and the Rector.

-          I have noticed needs to harmonise service entities and delegate decision-making power and duties. University Services has a huge amount of expertise that is not sufficiently visible and available in the current structure and operating model. I believe that the staff will take this as a positive change, says Päivi Seppä.
