Social Media in Organizations: Comparing the Excitement to the Reality

Much of the excitement regarding the potential benefits of implementing social media technologies in organizational contexts is based on the broad flexibility and accessibility of these communication platforms. Those designing and managing social media implementations often operate from the assumption that individuals a) want more options for connecting and collaborating with other workers, b) desire workplace technology that is similar to personal technology,  and c) seek opportunities to share and receive information from others. However, empirical evidence regarding the use of social media technologies in organizations reveals that workers are reluctant to use these tools to actively communicate with a diverse set of employees. This talk will draw from empirical research examining the use of social media at multiple organizations to help explain the limited use of these technologies, and examine how these findings might influence how we theorize about technology use. The talk will discuss the implications of extant work for how we might better study social media use in organizations and offer an agenda for future research.

Jeffrey W. Treem is an assistant professor of communication studies in the Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin. His program of research explores the relationship between communication practices and social perceptions of expertise, primarily in organizational contexts. Specifically, his studies examine how communication technologies facilitate recurrent, interactive practices that affect attributions of knowledge individuals make regarding coworkers, and the perceived value of organizational work. Dr. Treem’s work appears in publications such as the Journal of Computer-Mediated CommunicationJournal of CommunicationCommunication MonographsJournal of Applied Communication Research, and the Annals of the International Communication Association. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication and the Journal of Applied Communication Research. Dr. Treem was awarded the 2017 Linda L. Putnam Early Career Scholar Award from the Organizational Communication Division of the International Communication Association.

The talk is hosted by the Department of Language and Communication Studies.
