Open University

At the Open University you can study, for example, written and speech communication, languages and intercultural communication. Open University courses are subject to a fee. Those in an employment relationship with the University of Jyväskylä are usually entitled to a fifty per cent discount on the fees. Some of the course offerings are also free due to staff training support. The language of the courses is usually Finnish. Instruction in English is provided in intercultural communication.

Summer University

The Summer University of Jyväskylä offers language courses, as well as occupational wellness training and events, etc. The Summer University’s courses are subject to a fee. However, the courses planned in cooperation with the University’s staff training are free for staff in an employment relationship with the University. The language of the courses is Finnish. Instruction in English is provided in Finnish for Foreigners.

Language Centre

The Language Centre is in charge of supporting the language and communication skills and internationalisation of the entire University community. Language Centre arranges academic writing modules for doctoral students and language and communication skills training for university staff in conjunction with Staff Training services. Doctoral students can participate in the courses that have been approved in their individual postgraduate study plans. Staff training events are open to doctoral students in an employment relationship with the university. Please confirm with your supervisor your interest in participating in staff training before registering for course offerings. The language of the courses is Finnish or English.

University Communications

The University Communications unit provides guidance on the University’s internal and external communication. It also organises media training for doctoral students in collaboration with the Language Centre and other providers of staff training.  The Language Centre’s courses are open to all doctoral students (see Language Centre). The courses provided as staff training are open for those doctoral students who are in an employment relationship with the University of Jyväskylä. The language of the courses is Finnish.
