Rector Keijo Hämäläinen

Professor Keijo Hämäläinen (born 16 July 1963) started as Rector of the University of Jyväskylä 1 August 2017.

Keijo Hämäläinen has been a full-time vice rector of the University of Helsinki 2014-2017. Before that, he has been a dean of the Faculty of Science (2010–2013) and a professor of Physics from 2002 at the University of Helsinki. He has conducted research abroad for several years, for example, in the USA (Brookhaven National Laboratory) and in France (Grenoble).

Hämäläinen serves in several national positions of trusts, such as the chair of Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, a member of the Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee at the Academy of Finland, the chair of the Publication Forum steering group and a member of the advisory boards of the National Defence University and the Finnish Meteorological Institute. His international assignments include, for example, memberships in the board of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and in the research councils of several European research institutes. Keijo Hämäläinen is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and the Finnish Society of Science and Letters. In 2002, he received the Väisälä Prize of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. At the University of Helsinki, he was invited as an inspector for the Central Finland students’ association in 2017, awarded as the Communicator of the Year in 2010 and selected three times as the teacher of the year in the Department of Physics.
