Registration at the Local Register Office (maistraatti)

maistraatti.jpg

All foreign citizens who intend to stay or work in Finland for at least one year or longer must register at the Local Register Office (maistraatti).  This will be done by filling in the form "The Registration Information of a Foreigner".

Registration is recommended also for foreigners staying in Finland for less than one year since a Finnish personal identity code needed for receiving salaries and fees will be issued on the bases of registration.

The register data will be entered in the Population Information System (väestörekisteri). The data includes, for example, name, date of birth, nationality, family status and address. The data is used for various purposes (e.g. elections, taxation, health care, judicial administration and statistical purposes).

To register you will need the following documents:

  • Passport
  • Valid residence permit (non-EU citizens) / registration document of an EU citizen from the Finnish Immigration Service (EU-citizens excluding Nordic citizens)
  • Possible certificate of marriage and birth certificates of any children moving with you (see Legalisation of documents)
  • Employment contract

The following things will also take place at the Local Register Office within the registration:

Municipality of residence

Notification of move

Personal identity code
