Personal identity code

On the basis of registration you will receive a Finnish personal identity code (henkilötunnus).

The code is used for identification purposes and needed for the payment of wages, salaries and fees. It is also needed in banks, hospitals, offices of different authorities and applying for pension and other benefits.

Personal identity code was formerly known as a social security number. Nowadays it has nothing to do with the Finnish social security and is only used for identification purposes.

The personal identity code is more specific identification than just a name. Several people may have the exact same name but there are no two persons with exactly the same personal identity code. The code remains unchanged throughout the person’s lifetime.
