Welcome to the Christmas Party for JYU Internationals

We warmly welcome all JYU international Employees, Grant Recipients, Doctoral Students, Visitors and their families or close colleagues to the annual Christmas Party arranged by the International Staff Services

Date and time: Thursday, November 22nd 2018, from 16.30-18.45

Place: Main Campus, S building, Banquet Hall (room S212)

Experience Finnish Christmas food and traditions and see how Christmas is celebrated in ordinary Finnish families. There’s also live music and a chance for some Christmas dancing. Santa Claus has promised to visit us again and has prepared a Special Surprise for the event. Moreover, it seems all of us have been nice this year, since Santa has promised a small Christmas present for everyone attending.

The celebrations will start with a light Christmas dinner at 16.30 followed by the program at 17:00.

Health Care

Occupational Health Care is closed and the public health care operates at the Central Finland Central Hospital. At least the pharmacies at the super markets are open as well as the "Yliopiston Apteekki" at the city centre.

International Staff Services

Marja is on vacation on 7.12. and 27.12.2018, Sanna will be at work and Sari is on vacation on 7.12, 21.12. and 31.12.2018. We wish you a Merry Christmastime!

Things to do

There are a lot of fun events and things to do during the Christmas holiday season in Finland.

Here is a short list of some things you might like to check out before and during the holidays:

Christmas openings

Saturday November 10th 2018 from 10:00 - 18:00 Christmas opening at Naissaari, Vaajakoski. Pony riding for children from 11-13, Santa Claus from 11- 14, candle making, letters to Santa, christmas dance performances. Naissaari is an idyllic area in Vaajakoski, about 10 km from the Jyväskylä city centre. Bussess 1, 38, 43 and 215 should go near.

Saturday November 24th 2018 from 17:00 - 18:00, Traditional Jyväskylä Christmas opening at the city centre (Kompassi area). Music and Santa Claus with Christmas elfs. Fireworks at 18:00. The Christmas opening will continue at Toivola Old Courtyard from 18:00 - 20:00.

Christmas music Singalongs

December 11th 2018 from 17:00 - 18:00 Seminaarinmäki’s most beautiful Christmas Carols at Jyväskylä City Church at Church park. The programme includes sing-along, musical performances by students of the Department of Music and some Christmas readings. A Sunday collection for the Finn Church Aid will be collected at the end of the event. Free entrance. The event is organised by the University of Jyväskylä and the congregation of Jyväskylä.

Christmas concerts

December 14th and 15th at 17:00 and 18:00 Raymond Brigg's classic "The Snowman" animation with live accompaniment by the Jyväskylä Simphony, at Jyväskylä City Theatre. Duration 30 minutes.

Harju Ridge evening song

A Harju Ridge evening song from the Vesilinna tower will be played also before Christmas from 24.11. onwards at 6 pm. The music can be heard at the city centre and sometimes as far as the back areas of Kuokkala.
