The main objective of LukiMat is to offer web-based support for pre- and elementary school children who have difficulties in learning the basic skills of reading (Luki) and mathematics (Mat). LukiMat is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and it is carried out by the University of Jyväskylä and Niilo Mäki Instituutti.
The base of the reading skill rehabilitation method is the educational game Ekapeli which was developed in the University of Jyväskylä. The frame of Ekapeli is also used in identifying and assessing learning difficulties.
In the mathematics learning environment there are three learning platforms for practicing mathematics in different areas. The games applied in the project are Neure, Numerorata, and Ekapeli-matikka.
The LukiMat project aims to reach all children who need individual support in learning to read and calculate in the starting stage of school. According to estimates one fourth of the age group needs support. At best circa 30 000 children in pre- and elementary schools would benefit from the project.
The methods for early identification and support operation models to prevent learning difficulties will in the future be available nationwide for every child needing support.
