Academician Risto Nieminen will give a special lecture on nanoscience research at Department of Physics on Friday 24th of May at 12 o'clock.

The University of Jyväskylä will award Academician, Professor Emeritus Risto Nieminen a honorary doctorate in May in the University’s Conferment Ceremony. Before the Ceremony Nieminen will give a special lecture on nanoscience research on Friday 24th of May at Department of Physics.

The title of the lecture is “Nano meets machine learning: the second spring of quantum mechanics”.

The lecture is held at 12 o’clock at the Department of Physics (Ylistö,  FYS1). A coffee is served before lecture at 11.45 o’clock. You are warmly welcome!

Risto Nieminen, Professor Emeritus at Aalto University, who also holds the honorary title of Academician, received his doctoral degree from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1975. Only three years later, at the age of 30, he was appointed as Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä.

With the help of his international contacts, he was able to introduce top research on computational material physics to the University of Jyväskylä. He played an active role in the development of the Department of Physics and also served as the head of the department. Nieminen left Jyväskylä in 1987 but the close cooperation between him and the University is continuing.

Risto Nieminen has made a huge contribution to theoretical and computational physics in Finland. He was also one of the first scholars to understand the importance of computational capacity. He headed the Centre of Excellence in Computational Nanoscience at Aalto University for 12 years.
