OVERVIEW OF THE LHEC DESIGN STUDY AT CERN

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is a proposed future facility at CERN, which collides the 7-TeV protons circulating in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with a 60-GeV lepton beam at a single collision point. As a result of the combination of superconducting accelerating structures and the energy recovery technique, luminosities of order 1e33-1e34/cm^2/s can be achieved. In preparation for the LHeC, an ERL test facility is foreseen, which would serve as a test bed for SRF development, cryogenics, and advanced beam instrumentation, as well as for studies of ERL-specific beam dynamics. This test facility would comprise one or two linacs, each consisting of 4 or 8 superconducting 5-cell cavities at an RF frequency of ∼802 MHz, and, ultimately, two or three return arcs on either side. The average beam current should be above 6 mA in order to explore the parameter range of the future LHeC. A demanding effort is required to develop and evaluate a baseline design of the ERL configuration. The ultimate goal is a design that operates on multiple operating points in order to allow for a comprehensive validation of the key concepts for the final LHeC.
