ToLP – Towards Future Literacy Pedagogies

ToLP, Towards Future Literacy Pedagogies. Finnish 9th graders’ and teachers’ literacy practices in school and out-of-school contexts, is a multidisciplinary research project, carried out at the University of Jyväskylä, Centre for Applied Language Studies and Department of Languages. The project has been funded by the Academy of Finland (2007-2009).

The purpose of the study is to explore mother tongue and foreign language literacy practices in school and out-of school contexts from the viewpoint of 9th grade students and their foreign language and mother tongue teachers in Finland. The study also aims to evaluate the extent to which literacy practices in schools and communities meet and overlap, and whether school is able to meet the challenges of the knowledge society. Issues about media choices, ways of using and producing texts, assessment practices, curriculum planning, and teacher education are discussed in order to shape literacy theories and pedagogies that dynamically respond to social, cultural and technological change.

The project adapted a multidisciplinary and multi-method approach where literacy was examined from various perspectives: (new)literacy studies, socio-cultural theories and socio-constructivist learning theories that emphasize the interdependence of social and individual literacy and learning practices.
