Coming to Jyväskylä for doctoral studies

There are different options to come do doctoral studies in Jyväskylä.

If you have been accepted as a doctoral student at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (see the application process)

For assistance with arrival and residency in Finland, see below:

1.1. A doctoral student who is a staff member of the University of Jyväskylä and is arriving in Finland:

  • Your superior will forward your information to the International Staff Services team which will be in touch with you in matters relating to moving to Finland.
  • Information about living in Finland and in Jyväskylä is available from the International Staff Guide maintained by International Staff Services (https://www.jyu.fi/en/workwithus/international-staff-guide). From the International Staff Guide you can also find more information about the support provided by the International Staff Services.

1.2. A doctoral student who is not a staff member of the University of Jyväskylä and is financing his/her postgraduate studies with a scholarship or with own funding and is arriving in Finland for more than 30 days:

  • After you have agreed with your supervisors to get to Finland, contact the International Staff Services team (international-hr[at]jyu.fi) for assistance with immigration and residence issues (residence, housing, insurance, health care, taxation, pension and social security, governmental obligations and family support services).
  • Information about living in Finland and in Jyväskylä is available from the International Staff Guide maintained by International Staff Services (https://www.jyu.fi/en/workwithus/international-staff-guide). N.B: Please note that all information will not apply to you because you are not a staff member of the University of Jyväskylä!
  • Also see International JYU International Club -Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/JYUInternationalClub/). All International Club events are also intended for doctoral students coming to Finland.
  • The International Staff Services team informs the secretary of your department of your arrival. With him/her you will make an agreement on conducting research using the university's premises and equipment. He/she will also familiarize you with basics of working at the University of Jyväskylä and the department.

1.3. A doctoral student who is not a staff member of the University of Jyväskylä and is financing his/her postgraduate studies with a scholarship or with own funding and is arriving in Finland for less than 30 days: 

  • Contact the secretary of your department (your supervisor-in-charge can tell you the contact information of him/her). With him/her you will make an agreement on conducting research using the university's premises and equipment. He/she will also familiarize you with basics of working at the University of Jyväskylä and the department.
  • Information about living in Finland and in Jyväskylä is available from the International Staff Guide maintained by International Staff Services (https://www.jyu.fi/en/workwithus/international-staff-guide). N.B: Please note that all information will not apply to you because you are not a staff member of the University of Jyväskylä!
  • Also see International JYU International Club -Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/JYUInternationalClub/). All International Club events are also intended for doctoral students coming to Finland.  

If you are a doctoral student in a university outside Finland: visiting doctoral students

Doctoral students whose home universities do not have a cooperation agreement with the University of Jyväskylä can apply to the University of Jyväskylä as so called visiting doctoral students. Visiting doctoral students can be admitted for a minimum of three months and a maximum of one academic year. In order to apply to the University of Jyväskylä as a visiting doctoral student, the applicant must be enrolled in a university outside Finland.

After the application to the University of Jyväskylä as a visiting doctoral student has been approved, please contact International Staff Services (international-hr[at]jyu.fi) in matters relating to moving to Finland.
