HTK Work experience as a part of postgraduate studies

The University of Jyväskylä Board approved the structure and the general principles of the University of Jyväskylä graduate school for doctoral studies in a meeting held on 23 March 2011 (https://www.jyu.fi/opiskelu/tohtorikoulutus/en/structure/structure/view). According to the principles it is recommended that credits earned from work are included in the degree and

”The work should be demanding and differ from the preparation of the dissertation itself (i.e. teaching, research, participation in departmental or university development, work outside of the University of Jyväskylä).

According to this recommendation, doctoral students can earn credits (ECTS) from work which is in accordance with their postgraduate study plan and is connected to their field of study.

The doctoral student has to complete a written reflection task in order to receive the credits. The main supervisor defines the details of the assignment.

After the supervisor has read the reflection task he/she makes the decision about the evaluation of the assignment (graded pass/fail) and decides on the amount of awarded credits. The maximum amount of credits is 5 ECTS. The credits will be submitted under the code HTKJ321 Workplace learning and working life skills, which is included in the “Working Life Skills”-section of the postgraduate syllabus. The supervisor reports the assessment to the Faculty (Coordinator Heli Niskanen) so that the credits can be submitted into the study records.
