Review of literature

Review of the literature in a particular field of study or on a chosen research problem.

This type of thesis is based on written and/or other relevant sources, e.g. the internet. The student is required to critically evaluate or summarise the literature related to a particular field of study or to a certain research problem. The thesis requires both familiarity with a particular field of study, its theories and methods, and the ability to analyse and evaluate the research information from a particular point of view.

The thesis can be part of a larger research project, in which case the review serves the objectives of the project, or be inspired by a practical problem (e.g. the problems related to language teaching). In the latter case, the purpose is to collect and evaluate the information related to the question from the pedagogical point of view. The work can be extended to a licentiate thesis or doctoral dissertation by completing the review with research material (e.g. primary sources).
