The Department of History and Ethnology had some personnel changes in the administration at the beginning of the year. Senior Researcher Heli Valtonen started as the new Head of Department. Professor Jari Ojala, who previously held the position, has acted as the Vice Dean responsible for Research and Innovations since the beginning of the year.

Professor Pertti Ahonen was appointed as the Vice Head responsible for Research and Innovations, and Senior Researcher Piia Einonen as the Vice Head responsible for Education.

The new Head of Department, Heli Valtonen, has been the Vice Head of the Department of History and Ethnology for the last three and a half years. She trusts that the department will continue to be a supportive and encouraging influence on its staff, students, and associates.

- No great changes are to be expected. Going forward, the department will continue to strive to be a motivating and attractive place to work and study, says Valtonen.

Valtonen hopes increasingly to encourage everyone to partake in different projects, processes, and all of the department’s activities. She wants also to include a wider range of input from the different parts of the department.

- It would be good, if the students could participate even more in research and events related to research, Valtonen states.

The department will also continue to maintain good connections with other departments and disciplines.

- I want to develop the department especially as an interdisciplinary unit, Valtonen says.

Valtonen has researched a varied range of phenomena in Social and Economic Histories. She is the leader of research center of Gender Studies at the Department of History and Ethnology. She is also involved in developing the Childhood & Education research center.
