The West Network

The West Network.jpg

The West Network brings together researchers focusing on “the West”.

The members of the network study the West as a concept, idea, narrative, political and rhetoric tool, and as an imagined or real community with shared values, worldviews, culture, political agendas, and economic and military ties. The researchers of the network draw on critical and constructivist approaches, on the idea of Occidentalism, and also on the more traditional views of the West as an actor, entity, and “civilizational” framework for analysis. We welcome members especially from social & political sciences, and humanities, but joining the network is free and open to all interested researchers from all disciplines.

We are not for or against “the West” – whatever it might be. Instead, we examine how the West exists in individual and collective imagination / in the societal and political reality of the people who identify themselves as Westerners, and of the people who do not.

The network serves as a platform where the members can contact and communicate with each other. Our activities include disseminating news of upcoming events, research projects, and publications of the members. We also do research, coordinate joint publications, and organize events ourselves.

The network is coordinated from the Department of History and Ethnology, University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
