Research in speech communication

The research activities of Speech Communication focus on interpersonal and group communication. We investigate both face-to-face and technology-mediated communication: interactional processes and structures, communication behavior, interpersonal relationships, and group and team communication.

The research in Speech Communication has a long tradition at the University of Jyväskylä. Over the years, the program has become one of the most significant European centers of internationally recognized research in the field. Our research focuses on the core area of dynamics of human interaction in working life.

The research projects, publications as well as doctoral dissertations center on these areas.

The Speech Communication program has gained a good reputation through an active network of international contacts. Members of the Speech Communication faculty annually participate in and organize panels at international scientific conferences in Finland and abroad. We have close contacts with the National Communication Association, the International Communication Association, and ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association). ECREA has a specific Speech Communication section, Interpersonal Communication and Social Interaction, founded by us.

The faculty in Speech Communication is active in Prologos, the Finnish National Association of Speech Communication.
